About Honolulu Intl Airport

Honolulu International Airport is the largest airport in the state of Hawaii. Over 20 million passengers utilize the airport annually. The airport identifier for Honolulu International Airport is HNL. It sits three miles outside the center of Honolulu.

History of HNL
Honolulu International Airport began its history as John Rodgers Airport in 1927. This was the first airport in Hawaii. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States Navy took control of the airfield. After the war, the airport reverted to civilian control and was eventually renamed Honolulu International Airport by 1951. The airport became an important stopping point for flights across the Pacific Ocean.

Runways
HNL has four runways that service traffic. The longest is the Reef Runway. This runway measures 12,000 feet and was the first to be built entirely offshore.
