About William P. Hobby Airport

Named in honor of a former Texas governor in 1967, William P. Hobby Airport is the oldest commercial airfield serving the City of Houston. The airport was originally a private airstrip that began operations in 1927. Houston purchased the facility 10 years later and named it in honor of Howard Hughes for his efforts to improve the airport. City officials subsequently changed the name because federal regulations prohibited naming the airfield to commemorate a living person. Hobby serves more than 9 million passengers each year with direct flights to 34 destinations and is home to several low cost carriers. The airfield has recently won several awards in the small airport category.

Inside the terminal, there is an assortment of retail shops, eateries and other amenities. These include wireless Internet access, banking facilities, a currency exchange booth, ATMs and a USO center for traveling military service personnel. The airport has a business center, conference room and an interfaith chapel. There are multilingual customer care representatives positioned in high traffic areas throughout the airport who provide information and medical assistance. The terminal has numerous amenities for passengers with physical disabilities and two pet rest areas for assistance animals.
