About Louisville Intl Airport

In the 1940s, The United States acquired a large piece of land from congressman Elisha David Standiford. The land was located just south of Louisville and was to be used as a military airfield. The Army Corps of Engineers completed Standiford Field in 1941.

In 1947, Standiford Field opened to commercial air traffic and quickly absorbed all passenger traffic from other local airports. The airport was so popular that just two years later extensive renovations and an expansion project expanded the traffic the airport could withstand. The renovation added six new gates and several thousand square feet. Another renovation was necessary in 1970 to expand capacity and add a concourse. In 1980, another major renovation increased passenger capacity to two million. The renovation cost 35 million dollars and added a new terminal. The international shipping company, UPS, took advantage of the updated and growing facility and put a shipping center inside the airport.
