About Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport

Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport is like its namesake, one of a kind. The airport identifier, the three letter code used to identify airports, is MSY, nothing close to what one would think and this is a reason. In 1910 an aviator named John B. Moisant died when his plane crashed just outside of New Orleans. The land was turned into stock yards bearing his name, Moisant Stock Yards. When the airport was built near the stockyards the name was used as an identifier since most residents knew where to find the stockyards. The airport was originally named Moisant Field/Moisant International, later it became New Orleans International Airport and was changed again in 2001 to honor the great Satchmo. It was decided that changing names is easier than changing airport identifiers so it remains MSY.

The airport is in the town of Kenner about 11 miles from downtown New Orleans. Nine airlines fly 125 departures daily out of Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport, 37 of them non-stop flights. Nearly 10 million passengers pass through the airport yearly.
