John Wayne Airport, also known as John Wayne International Airport and Santa Ana International Airport, is located in Orange County, California. The airport was originally constructed in 1923 as a flying school, but was eventually purchased by Orange County in 1939. The airport is named after the actor and entertainer John Wayne after he passed away in 1979 because John Wayne was a resident of Newport Beach. Prior to the name change, the airport was named Orange County Airport. The cities and areas surrounding the airport are Costa Mesa to the west, Newport Beach to the south, and Santa Ana to the north.
