The city of San Antonio acquired 1,200 acres of land to build its municipal airport in 1941. The Second World War forced the city to delay its construction project because the U.S. Army Air Corps needed the airfield to train squadrons. After the war, the military returned the facility to the city. The airport has grown to the point where it now encompasses 2,600 acres.
San Antonio International has two terminal buildings and 24 jet bridges that accommodate more than eight million passengers each year. Airlines provide nonstop flights to more than 30 cities. Popular destinations include Atlanta, Cancun, Houston, Los Angeles, Mexico City and New York.
