Southwest Florida International Airport was originally named Southwest Florida Regional Airport when it was built in 1973, but was renamed in 1993. This airport was certified for service in May of 1984. Since then, this international port has grown exponentially and has been named one of the top fifty United States airports for passenger travel. The airport is large in size, covering 3,431 acres southeast of Fort Myers. With twenty eight gates and three concourses, the terminal is designed to hold up to ten million passengers per year. On average there are 228 flight operations per day with eighteen different airlines showing their support to this airport. There are nonstop flights available for destinations within the United States and nonstop international flights to Germany and Canada.
